43 – Why Your Employees’ View Matters More Than You Think

Hello, and welcome to Episode 43 of The LeaseSmart Commercial Real Estate Podcast, brought to you by LeaseSmart.com. Your host is Craig Melby, the founder of LeaseSmart, whose objective is to find companies the best facilities and get them the best terms, making their business more profitable and less vulnerable to future, unpredictable circumstances.

Today Craig gives us a fascinating book review on Robert Cialdini’s Pre-Suassion which has some remarkable applications to the world of real estate and site selection.

Cialdini recounts how he noticed huge differences in his ability to write, based merely on where he was sitting! When he was sitting in his office at the university where he taught, he wrote one way and when he was sitting in his home office, he wrote another way. Of course, this wasn’t ideal for his book to bounce back and forth between two writing styles, two voices, if you will; so he decided to just stick to writing from home.

How does this apply to site selection? Well, if you want your employees to perform well, you might want to get in the business of caring what your employees’ views are while they’re at work. And for that matter, those cheesy “Hang in there” posters have a more powerful impact than you might think!

The bottom line is that rent is a minor factor compared to employee productivity, performance and retention. Your office space should give your employees something to feel inspired about. Glass-walled board rooms, open spaces and inspiring views have very positive, unexpected effects.

Check out Pre-Suassion, the Robert Cialdini book that Craig is reading and let us if you have any other insights regarding real estate site selection. Thanks for listening and have a great day!
